چکیده

But despite the portrait and interrogation by doctors in London, Jesty never received credit for his pioneering work, with all the credit and financial rewards going to Jenner with his many friends in the medical establishment in London who spent considerable time and money refining the technique. Jenner never accepted that he had been preempted over vaccination by Jesty. However, the Jestys freely admitted that they were probably not the first with vaccination, as indicated behind the parish church in the home village of Worth Maltravers. It states that Jesty was " the first person (known) that introduced the In the shadows: Detail of a newly revealed portrait of the physician Benjamin Jesty who carried out vaccination experiments ahead of Jenner. (Photo: Wellcome Trust Medical Photographic Library.) Cow Pox by inoculation " , thus respecting the fact that this widely known immunity to smallpox may have inspired other anonymous people to the same deed. And at a recent talk about Jesty's newly discovered portrait given by William Schupbach of the Wellcome Library in London at a symposium on the history of medicine, one of the participants, he recounts, mentioned some evidence of similar practices on one of the Greek islands in the eighteenth century, but using goats instead of cows. Had this been fully documented and led anywhere, we could now be talking about caprination rather than vaccination, notes Schupbach. Researchers working in Kenya have taken what are thought to be the first photographs of the critically endangered Ader's duiker antelope in their remaining mainland east-African habitat. The pictures were taken in the Arabuko-Sokoke forest in Kenya by special camera traps which were set up on forest tracks and triggered by heat or movement. The system allows scientists to photograph animals that are seldom seen because they are nocturnal, shy or just very rare. The two researchers, Amrita Neelaantan and Catherine Jackson, spent three months in Kenya. The purpose of the trip was to investigate whether camera traps could be used as a reliable method of counting Ader's duiker. Paignton zoo's head of science, Amy Plowman, said: " We think these pictures could well be the first photos of wild Ader's duiker ever taken. I've seen a few others that have been taken in captivity. It's a very exciting breakthrough — the more we learn about these animals the more we can do to conserve them. " The zoo's conservation …

Preference at First Sight

We consider decision-making and game scenarios in which an agent is limited by his/her computational ability to foresee all the available moves towards the future – that is, we study scenarios with short sight. We focus on how short sight affects the logical properties of decision making in multi-agent settings. We start with single-agent sequential decision making (SSDM) processes, modeling th...

Non - Line - of - Sight Sound Localization Using a Single Microphone

This paper presents an acoustic non-line-of-sight localization technique that uses a single microphone and assumes only a single diffraction in the first-arrival sound. Knowing a map of the environment of interests, the proposed technique considers the frequency, time and power profiles of the received first-arrival sound. The profiles at different positions are estimated by the application of ...

First Sight: A Human Body Outline Labeling System

First Sight, a vision system in labeling the outline of a moving human body, is proposed in this paper. The emphasis of First Sight is on the analysis of motion information gathered solely from the outline of a moving human object. Two main processes are implemented in First Sight. The first process uses a novel technique to extract the outline of a moving human body from an image sequence. The...

Site-Specific Stochastic Spatio-Temporal Channel Model for Sub-Urban Slightly Non-Line-of-Sight Microcellular Environment

Abstract This paper reports a site-specific spatio-temporal channel model for the suburban slightly NLOS (non-line-of-sight) microcellular environment, based on the field test result of the azimuth-delay spectrum. The parameter extraction scheme of the spatio-temporal channel is briefly reviewed [1, 2], first. Then, the implementation issue of the stochastic spatio-temporal fading simulator is ...
